Martha Ballenger, LL.B.
Martha D. Ballenger is a partner at Moore & Van Allen law firm and has devoted her
legal activities to the areas of estate planning, domestic relations, real estate and
health law. A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, Ms. Ballenger is
active in numerous professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the
American Health Lawyers Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys
Association.

Frank J. Brescia, M.D.
In June 1999, the Institute of Human Values in Health Care invited Frank Brescia to join
as a member. Dr. Brescia has devoted his professional and personal life to improving the
care of the dying. He has served on numerous committees and has published widely on issues
related to pain management. Currently he is director of the palliative care service
at MUSC and is active in several national professional societies. Dr. Brescia received his
M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Clarence M. Condon, III, Ph.D.
Dean of the School of Business and Economics at the College of Charleston, Clarence M.
Condon, Ph.D., has served as a member of the Institute of Human Values in Health Care
since its inception in 1995. Dean Condon is engaged in the work of numerous committees for
professional societies such as the American Economics Association, the Association for
Social Economics and the Southern Business Administration Association. Dean Condon
received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.

Walter J. Jones, M.H.S.A., Ph.D.
Walter J. Jones, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Health Administration at the
Medical University of South Carolina and an adjunct professor in the Department of Public
Health at Clemson University. He has published broadly and remains active with several
professional organizations, including the American Public Health Association, the
Association for the Social Sciences, and the South Carolina Academy of Science. Dr. Jones
received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin.

Philip H. Jos, Ph.D.
Philip H. Jos, P.h.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Political
Science at the College of Charleston. In addition to remaining active in several
professional organizations, Dr. Jos has written broadly on such topics as nuclear waste,
administrative responsibility and bioethics. He received his Ph.D. in public
administration from the University of South Carolina.

Albert Henry Keller, Jr.,
D. Min.
Albert H. Keller, Jr. is an associate professor in the Department of
Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Keller has
extensive experience in the area of medical ethics and has been widely published. Mr.
Keller received his S.T.M. (Masters of Sacred Theology) at Yale University and
his Doctor of Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary.

George Khushf, Ph.D.
George Khushf is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the
University of South Carolina. He has written extensively on medical ethics and served as
the managing editor of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy. Professor Khushf is also
the Humanities Director at the Center for Bioethics at USC. Dr. Khushf received his Ph.D.
from Rice University and was a Fulbright Graduate Fellow in Philosophy at the University
of Tübingen.

Martin Perlmutter, Ph.D.
Martin Perlmutter is an associate professor of philosophy at the College of
Charleston. He has written and published on issues related to medical ethics and is
currently active with several ethics consultation services. He is also active with
numerous professional organizations, including the Jewish Historical Society and the South
Carolina Society for philosophy. Dr. Perlmutter received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the
University of Illinois.

Robert M. Sade, M.D.
Robert M. Sade has served as the Director of the Institute of Human Values
in Health Care since its inception in 1995. He is Professor of Surgery in the Department
of Surgery at MUSC. He is also Medical Director of the South Carolina Organ Procurement
Agency. Dr. Sade has written extensively on medical ethics and his work has been widely
published. Dr. Sade is engaged in the work of numerous committees for professional
and medical societies such as the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the South
Carolina Medical Association, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Sade received his
M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Donald E. Saunders
II., M.D.
Dr. Saunders is a native of Columbia, SC and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the
University of South Carolina. In 1979 he joined the faculty of the University of
South Carolina School of Medicine as Professor and was Director of the Cardiology Division
from 1983 to 1989. He served as the Director for the Center for Bioethics at the
University of South Carolina from 1994-99. He is also a member of the Ethics
Committee of the South Carolina Medical Association, serving as Chairman in
1987-1989. Dr. Saunders received his M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine
and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
